The Hunter Expressway is a 40 kilometre dual carriageway freeway located in the Lower Hunter Valley linking the M1 Motorway near Cameron Park with the New England Highway at Branxton. Allan Bowditch was the Project Development Manager for this project for a period of 8 years steering the project from the conceptual phase through the environmental approval process and development of a detailed concept design.
Development of the concept design required extensive assessment of environmental constraints and analysis of engineering design options. Allan was responsible for harnessing RMS technical design staff as well as engaging external specialist consultants to provide engineering design, biodiversity assessment, cultural heritage assessment, urban design, hydrological modelling, traffic modelling, geotechnical investigations, road traffic noise modelling, economic impact assessment, cost estimation and economic analysis. This required the preparation of briefs, assessment of tenders and the engagement and management of highly skilled consultants in a wide range of disciplines.
The role included extensive consultation with Federal and State Government stakeholders as well as the broader community. In early 2009 Allan prepared the submission to Infrastructure Australia that was successful in achieving full Federal and State Government funding for construction of the project in the 2009 Federal Budget.
